The site initially served as a World War II staging post and Army base for the 82nd Airborne before their deployment to Normandy. After World War II, the military continued to use the base until 1955. In 1987, it was converted into a Category D (Open Prison) and later became a Category C closed establishment. Further developments occurred over the years, continuing until 2009.

 

In 2009, a riot occurred that lasted over 18 hours, rendering 75% of the prison uninhabitable. The prison officially closed its doors in 2011.

There were 14 recorded deaths in custody at HMP Ashwell between 1978 and its closure in 2009.

Many strange incidents have been reported by both visitors and those attending various activities at the venue, including cries of children, being punched or scratched, unusual smells, flashing lights, and unsettling feelings of foreboding.

Event information

  • Guests must wear suitable footwear and clothing, areas of the building has no heating and gets very cold.
