Built by Jedediah and William Strutt, the mill complex employed thousands of workers and shaped the region’s economy. Today, while the machinery has fallen silent, reports of unusual activity suggest the past may not be entirely at rest.
Join us for a night of ghost hunting as we explore the history and paranormal stories surrounding this iconic site. Key moments in the mill’s timeline include:
- 1776 – South Mill built by Jedediah Strutt
- 1786 – North Mill constructed
- 1796 – West Mill completed
- 1803 – North Mill destroyed by fire
- 1804 – North Mill rebuilt by William Strutt
- 1813 – Round Mill added to the complex
- 1912 – East Mill constructed, the final major addition
- 1959-1966 – West Mill and Round Mill demolished
- 1986 – East Mill closes
- 1991 – All mill operations cease
Working at Strutts Mills during its peak would have been incredibly challenging by today’s health and safety standards. The workers, many of them children employed to handle tasks only their small size could manage, faced dangerous conditions daily. Accidents were almost inevitable in such an environment, and long-term exposure to cotton dust could lead to “cotton lung,” a respiratory condition that affected many mill workers of the era.
Today, As we investigate the site, including the remaining mill buildings, Strutt House, and the old bridge, you’ll have the opportunity to explore areas where unexplained sights and sounds have been reported.
